The Pope...!
The feast day of St. Catherine of Alexandria was today - until 1969, when Pope Paul VI did some major housecleaning among the saints and arbitrarily wiped St. Catherine right off the Catholic calendar! For the record, Catherine was one of Joan of Arc's spiritual advisors, and was martyred by decapitation in Alexandria, Egypt, circa A.D. 310. Clearly, Catherine of Alexandria is worthier of being remembered than ANY POPE IN HISTORY (with the notable exception of the First - St.Peter and maybe a few others.)
She is worthier than Paul VI in particular, of course...
Based on this "event" -and this event alone- are POPES saints (they sure get referred to as such a lot; it's His Holiness this and His Holiness that... Sheesh!) Or are they just nincompoopish sinners like the rest of us - unworthy of kissing the feet of martyrs like St. Catherine of Alexandria?
(Yes - I do realize that Pope Innocent III did kneel before St. Francis of Assisi and kissed *his* feet... But hey, he was innocent... Thus, he was an EXCEPTION! Francis of Assisi was the curmudgeon there - and such a gesture was seen as a POLITICAL MOVE more than anything divinely inspired... Alas! Innocent III was one of thirteen (wow- a lucky number!) so aptly-named popes... Or were they? Probably not ALL of them, no... But that is not the point right now - or it is, but not just about 13 of them!)
We have had only 66 popes over all, so far - since A.D. 32 (!) and since Peter, the rock upon which Jesus built His Church (Pierre, the French translation of Pedro/Peter/Petrus/Pieter also means... rock!)
Sixty-six sinners, I say...
(Oops - I am influencing the potential voters! But it is my blog - my rules! *lol*)
